Preserving the Past: The Schweers Historical Foundation's Conservation Projects At the Schweers Historical Foundation, we are dedicated to preserving and promoting the history and heritage of our region. One of the ways we do this is through our conservation projects, where we work tirelessly to restore and protect historical artifacts and documents. In this blog post, we will take you behind the scenes of our conservation efforts and share some examples, thoughts, and tips for preserving the past. One of the key aspects of our conservation projects is the restoration of old books. These books hold valuable information about our history, but over time, they can become damaged and deteriorated. Our team of experts carefully cleans and repairs these books, ensuring that they are preserved for future generations. If you have old books in your possession, here are a few tips to help you preserve them: 1. Handle with care: When handling old books, make sure your hands are clean and dry. Avoid touching the pages directly, especially if you have lotion or oil on your hands. Use a book stand or support to prevent unnecessary strain on the spine. 2. Store in a controlled environment: Books are sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid basements or attics, as these areas tend to have fluctuating temperatures and high humidity levels. 3. Use acid-free materials: Acidic materials, such as regular cardboard or newspaper, can cause damage to books over time. When storing or packaging books, use acid-free materials such as archival boxes and acid-free tissue paper. Another important aspect of our conservation projects is the digitization of photographs and cataloging of artifacts. By digitizing photographs, we ensure that these visual records of our history are preserved in a format that can be easily accessed and shared. If you have old photographs or artifacts, consider digitizing them to protect them from further deterioration. Here are a few tips for digitizing: 1. Use a high-resolution scanner: To capture the details of the photograph or artifact, use a scanner with a high resolution. This will ensure that the digital copy is as close to the original as possible. 2. Handle with gloves: When handling photographs or artifacts, wear gloves to prevent oils and dirt from transferring onto them. This will help preserve their condition during the digitization process. 3. Organize and catalog: As you digitize your photographs and artifacts, create a system for organizing and cataloging them. This will make it easier to locate specific items in the future and ensure their preservation. Preserving the past is a labor of love, and at the Schweers Historical Foundation, we are committed to this important work. Through our conservation projects, we are able to protect and promote our history for future generations. If you have a passion for history and want to get involved, consider volunteering or supporting organizations like ours. Together, we can ensure that our past is preserved for the future.
